What is Aqua Yoga?
Aqua Yoga is a relatively new form of Yoga. It offers all the benefits of dry land yoga with the additional benefit of being low impact on the joints and bones
Who can practice Aqua Yoga?
Aqua Yoga is accessible to every age group, irrespective of fitness level,
previous yoga experience or swimming competence. It is ideal for people with arthritis, hip and/or knee replacements, pre-natal/post-natal, post-surgery, sciatica, yoga beginners as well as people who already have a regular yoga practice
What are the benefits of taking an Aqua Yoga Class?
Aqua Yoga is a gentle, meditative practice
It encourages deep fascial stretches, increases flexibility, balancing and relaxing the body through rhythmic breathing exercises. As the human body bears less weight in the water, Aqua Yoga makes it possible for people with joint pain to improve their strength, flexibility and range of motion without experiencing the pain they would during dry land exercises. Muscles relax and can be stretched and strengthened with less risk of injury
Is it suitable for pregnancy?
Yes! Aqua Yoga is the perfect practice for pregnancy. When we are in the water we carry only 10% of our body weight, so our range of motion and freedom of movement naturally increases.Aqua Yoga focuses on the alignment of the spine to increase balance and correct the body posture.During pregnancy, the mother's centre of gravity shifts and she begins to adjust her body posture to help carry the weight. Without the support and strengthening of the spine, lower back pain may occur and an overal physical discomfort. With the expansion of the uterus, the rectal abdominis muscles, (run from the rib cage to the pubic bone) may separate along the center seam which can lead to worsened back pain. Aqua Yoga is a gentle form of exercise that strengthens and lenthens the muscles, helps increase flexibility which in turn relieves spinal stress.Aqua Yoga increases oxygen in the blood and heart, promotes better circulation in the pelvic area and helps balance hormones. It is a breath based practise, helping the mother become relaxed and calm thus opening a good channel of communication between the mother and foetus. When the breath is stable, the mind is stable. When the mind is stable, there is no space for anxiety, worry and negativity. It is well known that a happy healthy mother equals a happy healthy baby!
